Wawrinka Topples Vukic On Indian Wells Return

In his first match back at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Stan Wawrinka defeated Australian qualifier Aleksandar Vukic 6-4 1-6 6-1 in 83 minutes.

Wawrinka, a former finalist of the BNP Paribas Open, crushed 17 winners during the contest. He broke Vukic to love to take a 5-4 lead in a tight opening set. He made no mistake in serving for a one-set lead.

Vukic responded swiftly in the second set, with Wawrinka’s momentum going off the boil. But that was only shortlived as the Swiss came back strongly in the third.

The 37-year-old secured a double break in the decider before serving to love for his 25th match win at the event. After bottoming outside the world’s top 300 last August, Wawrinka is now back in the world’s top 100 this week.

Kecmanovic, Two-Time Indian Wells Quarterfinalist

Miomir Kecmanovic received a bye in the first round by virtue of being a seeded player at this tournament. The Serbian World No. 31 is a two-time quarterfinalist at Indian Wells, reaching the last eight stage in 2019 and 2022 respectively.

His run here last season came a bit as a shock with Kecmanovic accounting for wins over Marin Cilic, Botic van de Zandschulp, and Matteo Berrettini against the odds.

Outside a few early defeats in 2023, Kecmanovic has been in very good form coming to Indian Wells. He reached his first final fo the season at the ATP 250 in Delray and was denied ultimate glory by top-ranked American Taylor Fritz

Last week, the 23-year-old came up short against Denis Shapovalov in one of the most entertaining matches in Acapulco.

Wawrinka v Kecmanovic Prediction and Tip

This should be a really compelling match from a fanatic standpoint. Wawrinka’s offense against Kecamnovic’s defense should be intriguing.

The Swiss has not lost the intensity and pace in his ground strokes, especially off that elegant backhand. But with Kecmanovic hitting his stride coming to the tournament, the young Serbian will have a tiny edge.
