Thursday horse racing tips

Doncaster

  • 12.55 – Maiden Hurdle: Jagwar 11/10 (NAP – 2pts)

Huntingdon

  • 1.40 – Novices’ Handicap Hurdle: Goblet Of Fire 4/1 (1pt)
  • 2.50 – Novices’ Hurdle (Listed): Handstands 2/1 (NB – 1.5pts)

Jagwar

Ought to go much better this time out and justify the strong backing he had last time out to go off 5/2 favourite in a Class 3 handicap.

His jumping wasn’t quite what the trainer and staff had seen in his work at home and have given him ample time to improve further from that run while featuring on good ground could also spark a lot more improvement than the heavy going he faced last time.

This is a horse that has been on the radar for a few months now and his return coming into this level suggests a strong win is on the cards to justify favouritism.

Goblet Of Fire

Roccovango has to carry top-weight despite being the same overall rating as Goblet Of Fire.

He would stand quite a decent chance considering it’s his first start for trainer Olly Murphy for his handicap debut.

He placed quite well behind War Soldier in December who also had Matata beat in second, which looks like strong form.

However, his three runs since hasn’t sparked too much improvement and is a bit of a concern in comparison to the strong chance of Goblet Of Fire.

The Nicky Henderson-trained four-year-old is much younger than the rest but far more unexposed with boosted form coming from his win last time out ahead of Maasai Mara.

That horse went on to win quite nicely on his second hurdle start beating Golden Maverick by over seven lengths in nice style.

Really indicates a potential for a strong showing here from Goblet Of Fire but it is a strong race.

Handstands

Jango Baie is the popular favourite of this four-runner contest.

But he was left to pick up the pieces after favourite Farren Glory fell two out when travelling arguably the best.

Handstands is given 5lb from Jango Baie and it looks promising that his mark can still improve in this listed hurdle.

It’s still difficult to know just how good Handstands is after three successive victories, including two novice hurdles this winter.

The Ben Pauling-trained horse by Getaway, won convincingly both times with the latest being a strong 2/7 favourite to beat Taras Halls comfortably by seven lengths.

He defied a penalty that day and won readily while still showing signs he can progress from that run, so it’s interesting to see him such a close market rival of a horse who’s already won a Grade 1.
