Italy’s Ultima Generazione (UG – Last
Generation) group interrupted play at the ‘Internazionali’
Italian Open tennis tournament on Monday in the latest in a long
series of acts of civil disobedience that they have staged to
highlight the need to tackle the climate crisis.

One of the protestors ran onto the court where American Madison
Keys and Romanian Sorana Cirstea were in action, throwing white
liquid onto the surface.

Two other protesters tried to glue themselves to the stands.

Other protestors disrupted play on another court where a men’s
doubles match was taking place.

Police removed the activists and play resumed after the mess was
cleared up, with Keys completing a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

“With today’s act of civil disobedience, we want to remind
everyone that last year 62,000 people died from the heat in
Europe,” UG said in a statement.

“This is just one of the many effects of the climate and
ecological crisis. Profound change in our system is essential to
safeguard our territory and its citizens. Non-violent resistance
is an alternative to political apathy”.
