Lively battle expected by the Trent
The Magpies will look to extend their unbeaten run to four matches when they play away at Forest in the Saturday evening Premier League kick-off.
After a run of four consecutive defeats over the festive period, Newcastle have steadied the ship of late, losing only one of their past five.
They will fancy their chances against a Reds side that have not won any of their previous seven inside 90 minutes, but injuries in both camps mean this encounter could be close.
Forest avoided relegation last season thanks to some spirited performances at home, but the City Ground has not been as much of a fortress this term.
The Reds, managed by Nuno Espirito Santo from December 20 since Steve Cooper’s dismissal, have only won three times at home this term, and have lost five of their previous six in front of their own fans in the top flight.
While Forest have managed to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup, they have not been convincing, needing replays to beat both Blackpool and Bristol City – and in the latter case requiring penalties.
Goals have been a key feature in the Reds’ past six at home, with at least two goals scored in each game, but the Magpies may struggle to take advantage of the patchy Forest defence.
While boss Eddie Howe’s men have won three in a row away from home in all competitions, scoring eight goals, they will be without Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak for the visit to Nottingham.
The duo have been vital to the Geordies’ attack – and while Howe still has some quality options, it is tough to back them to get the job done. A draw with goals for both sides looks likely.
Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle tip 1: Draw and both teams to score @ 10/3 with Sky Bet
Awoniyi to lead by example
Espirito Santo has managed to get the best out of Chris Wood since his arrival at the City Ground, and the former Magpies striker scored a hat-trick when these two teams met on Boxing Day.
Sadly for Forest, Wood is nursing a hamstring injury, but Taiwo Awoniyi is a more than worthy replacement. The Nigerian has spent some time on the sidelines this season but still scored five goals in 12 appearances.
The powerful forward netted in the recent 2-1 defeat to Arsenal and he should be able to play his part against Newcastle, who have conceded 15 goals in their previous five matches.
Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle tip 2: Taiwo Awoniyi to score or assist @ 1/1 with Sky Bet
Magpies midfielders to be at the heart of the action
With Isak and Gordon sidelined, Howe’s squad will need to share the workload more than usual.
Midfield pair Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes should be busy at either end of the pitch, and the former will be looking to get himself on the scoresheet.
Longstaff has scored four league goals this season, with two of those coming against Luton Town last time out. He has three goals in his past three appearances in all competitions, and he has managed 10 shots in his previous five games, with half of those hitting the target.
While Guimaraes could do some damage in the final third, he will be doing all he can to slow Forest down.
The Brazilian has already collected nine yellow cards this season and he has committed 31 fouls. Newcastle’s fragile defence will need protection throughout the clash, and Guimaraes is likely to cross the line several times.
Finally, recent games involving the Magpies have been entertaining from the first whistle, with goals scored in both halves in four of their past five Premier League matches, including in their 3-1 defeat to Forest in the reverse fixture.
Newcastle will feel they can take the lead early, but Forest have scored six second-half goals in their previous five Premier League matches.
Combine a goal in both halves with two or more shots for Longstaff and a couple of fouls for Guimaraes in an appealing 6/1 bet builder.
Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle tip 3: BuildABet – Sean Longstaff 2+ total shots, Bruno Guimaraes to commit 2+ fouls, a goal in both halves – yes @ 6/1 with Sky Bet
