VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) – NBA Hall-of-Famer Alonzo Mourning will join Sara Perkins, Vice President of Business Development, and Matt Gierden, Senior Vice President, at AshBritt, to unveil the new gym at the Boys and Girls Club in Valdosta on Tuesday, Feb. 13th.

Chairman Bill Slaughter, Lowndes County Emergency Management Director Ashley Tye, and Mayor of Valdosta Scott Matheson will be in attendance as well, along with other Lowndes County leadership.

According to the release, in August 2023, Hurricane Idalia devastated South Georgia, causing hundreds of square miles of devastation. Among the damage was the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta’s gymnasium.

The gym was rendered unusable when flood waters poured in, warping the floors and causing a health risk of mold growth.

The Ashbritt Foundation heard about the damage and was eager to step in — making a generous donation of $53,000 to fund repairs. The AshBritt Foundation makes investments back into communities with a focus on long-term recovery efforts and partnering with local organizations that support disaster recovery.

AshBritt managed all disaster debris removal operations in the cities of Valdosta, Dasher, and Remerton, as well as Lowndes County, Georgia, clearing hundreds of trees and limbs and approximately 1,300,000 cubic yards of debris from rights-of-way (ROW).

The Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta provides nearly 1,000 young people a safe place to learn and grow each day across six sites in Lowndes and Brooks County. The downtown gymnasium is central to the Club’s programming, with 500+ children and teens filling it daily.

The grand re-opening of the gym will be quite the celebration — this year, the Club celebrates its 80th year of operation!

The reopening event will include festivities such as a ribbon cutting on the new gym, a presentation from the Valdosta Boys and Girls Club, food and refreshments, and a free throw competition with students and local community leaders.

The kids will have the chance to shoot hoops with All-Star Alonzo Mourning and he will be signing jerseys.
