Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 28 seed, beat No 6 seed Marketa Vondrousova 7-6 (1), 6-3 to reach the last 16 of the Italian Open at the Foro Italico in Rome on Saturday evening.

Cirstea, ranked No 32, will face the winner of the match between Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 12 seed, and American Madison Keys, the No 18 seed, next.

The 34-year-old Romanian won against qualifier Brenda Fruhvirtova (7-5, 6-0) in the previous round of the Rome tournament.

During the 64 of the Rome tournament, Vondrousova, ranked No 6, edged out Romanian Ana Bogdan (6-2, 3-6, 6-4).
