Twenty-two years ago, jockey Frankie Dettori faced a life-altering moment when the light aircraft he was in, en route from Newmarket to Goodwood with friend Ray Cochrane, encountered difficulties shortly after takeoff. Tragically, pilot Patrick Mackey lost his life as the plane descended and crashed. Miraculously, Cochrane managed to pull Dettori out of the wreckage, saving him from the dire fate.

Despite the crash, Dettori emerged with only a fractured ankle and a broken thumb, reflecting on the ordeal with the haunting words,I should have been dead.” Dettori vividly recalls the acceptance of his impending fate during the crash, revealing that he wasn’t screaming but rather disappointed at the thought of leaving life at the age of 29, with unfulfilled dreams such as winning The Derby.
