BENSALEM TOWNSHIP, PA —With spring arriving in a little more than a week, Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard will be spreading its sweet-tasting treats by opening 40 more stores and expanding into three more states. And Rita’s is also introducing a new flavor.
Representatives of the Bensalem-based company —which got its start in the township in 1984 —told Patch this week that Rita’s will “grow its presence” in the Midwest by opening locations in Missouri, Illinois, and Texas.
And while most Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard shops are open in Bucks and Montgomery counties and surrounding areas, Rita’s will branch out into E-commerce and also open more drive-thru locations, said Maddie LaPorta, who represents Rita’s.
LaPorta said that E-commerce is a key focus for the brand to remain top of mind to consumers. She said Rita’s will continue to focus on its loyalty program, rewards, and location finder capabilities in its app.
Rita’s will also add an online ordering platform in the app to give customers the ability to place an order for pickup or third-party delivery.
Rita’s offers its free giveaway on the first day of spring, which is March 20. This spring, it will debut a new ice: Gummy Bear.
More information will be announced about other new treats, including Rita’s Cold Brew Frozen Coffee line coming in April.
Rita’s has more than 550 locations in 31 states with plans for 40 new locations, LaPorta said.
Rita’s Franchise Company, LLC, is a privately owned and operated chain that was founded in Bensalem Township in May 1984 by Bob Tumolo.
LaPorta said that Rita’s plans to expand into Missouri, and is focused on growing its presence along the Route 95 corridor. Areas such as Texas, Illinois, New York, Central/North Jersey, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas are targeted for growth.
She said Rita’s is also reaching out to people regarding franchise opportunities.
“We are often contacted by franchise prospects who grew up with the brand, but have since moved, and are very passionate about opening their very own Rita’s shop and introducing Rita’s to their communities,” the company said.
While Rita’s primary expansion includes traditional walk-up locations with drive-thrus and patio seating, Rita’s does have several non-traditional locations such as Rivers Casino in Philadelphia, BWI Airport in Baltimore, and other stadiums and theme parks around the country.
Rita’s currently has five drive-thru locations in New Jersey with another expected to open next month in Lindenwold.
